Do you still have old diaries ? When you re-read these records of your life story, do you recognise yourself in what you wrote down maybe decades ago?  I find old journals can hold surprising revelations, describing life lessons that had yet to reach their full potential at the time they were recorded, yet already sort of glimmered at the horizon of conscious awareness with thoughts and feelings that years later start to make sense.

Journaling I find, is like talking to a life coach, but then that life coach is you, yourself . It’s a process. While writing, I find my way through, forests, fields, seas and mountain ranges of words and sentences until at some point I find myself ‘out of the woods’ or ”on top of the world’, rescued from my sea of troubles.

Journaling is a very important part of the ritual of mid-winter contemplation. It’s a way of talking to oneself through writing. Giving titles to the dreams one has, helps to  become more aware of their meaning. Words and sentences are like magic in that sense.  They hold the ability to transport thoughts, feelings and intentions to higher levels of understanding

The gift of expressing oneself – either through painting, sculpting, dance,  song, sound or any other form of art  is a precious human trait and certainly there for a reason, going as far back as the times when humanity as we know it today was still in it’s early stages.  Art may well be among the oldest tricks in town to get in touch with the true essence of who one is.

The first written expressions ever found date back to roughly 3400 years B.C.  within Sumerian civilisation, a relatively short amount of time on the scale of human history.

In our present day and age, writing, using language is the main source awareness. Even more so it often supersedes, intuition or inspiration. But just like midwinter contemplation originates from ancient ways of looking at life, the written word also contains deeper meaning. Words have Soul and Spirit. The way we use them tells a lot about who we are.

The Tarot of Marseille  the Nan Yar Who Am I cards are based on, depicts card number V as The Pope.
Seeing the Marseille Tarot came into the world at the end of medieval times, when the pope in Western Culture had been regarded as the representative of God on earth for more than a thousand years, the interpretation of this  Archetype as the spiritual aspect of life on earth makes sense.

As the interpretation of the Tarot changes throughout the ages; depending on the stage a culture is in and many other religious beliefs have found their way into the western world, we can nowadays see card number V: The Pope, as a representative of a more widely ranged set of spiritual components embedded in the way we look at life on the western material plane.

For some this will imply they begin to acknowledge a divine presence within themselves, while others will refer to the belief system they recognise themselves in, whether that’s Buddhism, Hinduism, Paganism, Humanism, Gnosticism or any other belief system that represents the way one thinks and feels about the existial basics of life..

When this card comes your way, you might want to contemplate on questions outside the logistics of life, such as : Why Am I here? What is my purpose in life? What gives my life meaning? Or the biggest biggie of  the Western World since the first recorded ‘Know Thyself ‘ inscription on the temple of Apollo in ancient Delphi, indicated people started to wonder about themselves: Who am I?

And of course…what better place to explore ones spiritual components than in ones dreamworld?

V: The Pope, is the 5th card of the 22 Archetypes of the Major Arcana, also known as the Bigger Secret. These 22 cards are divided in a so called Nil-card – without a number – and 3 rows of 7 cards. In total this makes 22 cards of which 21 are divided in 3 layers:

• The first row of 7 , cards I – VII characterises the life traveller on the Material World.
• The second row of 7 cards VIII- XIV characterises the Soul Journey of the life traveller
• The third row of 7 cards reflect the Spiritual Facets the life traveller is gifted at the birth and remain part of the Eternal Journey – including the present life on earth, regardless whether the life traveller is aware of this.

Looking at these 3 categories, the archetype of the Pope, the 5th card (out of 7) characterises the life traveller in the material world.

While the numerology of the number 4 is all about balance, as written on the 4 of Insights card, it can also be a bit limiting, like is stated on the 4 of  Challenges when set patterns get the better of us; or even boring to an a certain extent, when we start doing things automatically without thinking, like described on the 4 of Gifts.

When practiced as the art of observation however, as described on the 4 of Tools it can lead to a very balanced outlook on life. Like with all other  numbers, the number 4 is open to many different interpretations.

The third card of the 12 day challenge of the winter solstice contemplation, explains a bit more about the 3 of Tools:  a cord of the minor arcana, also known as the lesser secret, that mirror your stand in daily life.

While the 22 cards of the major arcana – also known as the bigger secret- mirror the universal human characteristics each and everyone is born with; the minor arcana depicts how these characteristics are applied by each an everyone of us in a unique way in daily life. There are as many unique applications, as there are over  8 billion people in this world today.

With 3, as the number of creation and Tools as the suit of 14 cards that depict the worldly tools at our disposal to explore the material world, the 3 of Tools, with ‘dreams’ as its key word, plays an important part during the winter solstice contemplations.

Next to asking yourself what this card reflects in relation to your  explorations in daily life. the 3 of Tools also reminds you to explore your dreams to see what messages they might bring from the spiritual world or even your own deeper knowing.

The Popess, the card carrying the roman numeral II, is all about the wisdom we all carry within as life-travellers on earth. She comes right after card I: the Illusionist. While the Illusionist can still paint a different picture diverting things from what they really are, the inner wisdom wisdom card characterised by the archetype of the Popess signifies what we know to be true deep down inside. Our intuition – no mattere how doubtful one is  at times about its properties – is hardly ever wrong.

The Popess is card number II  of  the row of 7 cards that are all related to the material plane. Within that physical reality she mirrors the characteristics of inner knowing and is closely connected to the realms of our dreamworlds.

What does the word potential summon up for you when you look back at 2024? Which Challenges came your way? Did they come for a reason? What did they have to tell you? How did you respond ? Which position did you take? What change did they encompass?

Yesterday, December 21st, I chose my first Nan Yar card in a series of 12 in the coming days, to contemplate on the experiences that came my way in 2024. By doing so I follow  a midwinter ritual originating from ancient times, when people were still highly connected to the natural world and abided by a  354-day moon calendar rather than a solar year 0f 365 (and a bit) days, leaving 12 days unaccounted for.

The card that I chose,  1 of Challenges , reminds me of my birthright to create my own life story.

Taking this awareness with me into sleep during the first winter solstice night resulted in a vivid dream in which I moved into a new spacious house with lots of windows with different views and lots and lots of bookcases filled with books. Also many people were helping me with this big move which made me feel supported and safe. What if this were your dream? What would it tell you?

The colour ‘Challenges’  (swords in the Tarot) in the Nan Yar interpretation is all about the development of the I-consciousness, the higher Self or spiritual part we all carry within, regardless of beliefs.

The number 1  in the Nan Yar interpretation is seen as the number of Potential.

Every Tarot card that comes your way, will mirror exactly that which applies to your unique life-journey , as you of all people holds the inner understanding on what your life’s mission is all about.

Do you sometimes wonder how a Tarot card seems to reflect exactly that which applies to what  evolves in your life story?  The answer to this secret is perhaps less mysterious as you might think.  A little courage and honesty towards yourself opens gateways to self reflection that give you total freedom of choice.

Did you know that 56 out of the total of 78 cards of the Game of Tarot, are based on the ordinary card game, and that this ‘Minor Arcana’ or  ‘Lesser Arcana’ as it is called, adapted Spades, Clubs, Hearts and Diamonds; using their Number- and Court-cards to give a deeper meaning to daily life experiences?

Starting with a simple playing card has the potential to give you insight in the meaning  behind common or more challenging daily life experiences.

The number one rule when interpreting a card! 
When using ordinary cards – or any oracle for that matter- it is of the utmost importance to refrain from (self) judgment or pre-conceived convictions on who you think you are and allow your True Self be The Storyteller. You are the conductor, musician and instrument of your life-journey. The interpretation you give to what takes place, determines the outcome.

Here’s how to mirror your inner knowing through an ordinary playing card.

• Use a separate piece of paper or start a journal assigned to card interpretations, and note down when, where and optionally why you draw a card. When reflecting on a card later on, remembering the spot on earth where you were when you consulted a card, will help refresh your memory of the experience.

• Shuffle a deck of ordinary cards, draw one and record its Colour (Spades, Clubs, Hearts, Diamonds), Number (1-10)and/or Court characteristics

• Observe the triggers the card holds for you. What is reflected by the combination of Colour and Number or Court card. What does your  inner knowing have to say about it?

• Add your findings to your paper or journal.

What do we teach our children when we offer them plastic hair-dye toy horses in advance of a ceremony commemorating the people that perished in the second war?

I was thinking that when I was watching television on the evening of May fourth just before 8 pm, waiting for the annual broadcast of the ceremony on the Dam in Amsterdam to start, honoring the people that died as a result of the atrocities of the second world war. Advancing the program was a block of commercials. Normally I avoid advertising like the plague. I find it extremely disturbing to observe how many hours a day people spend watching or listening to commercials and in fact literally and figuratively ‘buy’ what they have to offer, exposing themselves in a Pavlov response; drooling over products they would never have thought of buying or even knew they needed.

So also here, 5 minutes before the WW 2 commemoration ceremony was about to start I found myself watching plastic toy horses that could be groomed into different hair colors, with the girls (of course you would not show a boy doing this, would you now commercial maker) dressed up in hair-do’s using the same sort of dye. What are we telling these children? In a few moments we will show you images to remind you 85 million died because of a war; but meanwhile you can live in fantasyland using environment polluting products?What’s the message here?

And what’s next I sometimes wonder? Kardashian look-a-like dolls that children can do their own plastic surgery on to make them look better?

How can we teach our children not to repeat the mistakes humanity made 79 years ago, when we  start by telling them they can can full heartedly put the emphasis on appearances; on what they look like?

Each returning year, I watch the documentaries on the second world war and search my heart for an explanation how people can do this to each other. This year I saw a picture of a perfectly likable looking group of women on a holiday, relaxing in a forest doing sports and having a picnic. Seconds later I learn these women are guards of a German concentration camp , having a day off.  How can these two things exist next to each other with pictures to prove it? A sunny day out in the forest; and next day back to work killing thousands of fellow human beings.

Some of you might think it stretches too far to compare this two examples; but how can we expect our children to understand the meaning of compassion and gratitude when we precede the examples by a commercial about a plastic toys of which you can change the hair color, an extension, pardon the pun, of the barbie culture we raise our daughters with?

At first I thought of choosing the Illusionist as the card to go with this blog. The first card of the row of 7 cards governing the physical plane telling us that unless we can see through the illusions, the Maya, that is created for us to serve the forces at play in today’s world, we will have trouble envioning the path we walk during our time on earth.

On second thought I decided to go for the Two of Challenges: Dilemma; 

“Two” because of the duality and dilemma of every thesis; in this case should children be presented with
commercials temptations they do not need; while they could be learning skills they could definitely use in their life to come?

“Challenges” because these, together with their element fire; concern the development of our I-consciousness; who am I: what do need and more importantly want to learn?

In the old days our children were taught how to hunt; how to cook; how to sow, how to farm land and yes how to defend themselves in battle. They were hardly  taught unnecessary skills; especially not those that were invented for them by marketeers who could earn money off their idea.

Personally I think it puts children on the wrong foot to give them pre-designed toys to play with that are basically created to generate sales; implementing distractions for the true meaning of life.

With the American presidential election in progress this very moment, I find it hard to choose a suitable subject to blog about.

To be very honest I am a bit gloomy about it all. What is happening right now under our very noses is such an example of poverty in human development, that I feel somewhat deflated where it concerns being my usual positive self and write about how we can make this our world a better place.

I guess what the world is experiencing from a numerology point of view at the moment is a typical case of number 2; and no I am not referring to any sort of shitload here, even when some of what is happening in the world right now deserves that title.

The number 2 in general signifies being stuck between opposites
Where the number 1 is about all potential that can be found in basically everything;
and the number 3 is about the creative powers every human being owns within and can use to develop basically anything;
the number 2 is the learning curve in which we differentiate the potential of number 1; having to make a choice between the several possibilities, in order to move on from there on and create a more substantial 3 to improve the circumstances we live in.

The world seems to be very much stuck in the 2 right now however.
Differences in opinion seem to leading to more violence than ever and are in way larger than life. Differences between rich and poor are becoming bigger.  Differences between peoples are becoming more pronounced, causing more segregation. I could make this a very long unwelcome list and yet it is what is happening right now.

It is generally viewed the West is such a well developed, prosperous and rich part of the world. ‘The civilized world’ we call it. But are we really?

Are we any richer than indigenous tribes, where people still communicate without computers and cellphones? Are we better off than people who work their agricultural soil with their hands rather than machines; and use the support of the seasons and nature itself to create a healthy harvest, rather than fertilizers and pesticides?
Are we any wealthier for driving a beautiful car, wearing an expensive watch or dressing after the latest fashion?

Fortunately, the good thing about number 2 is that it always has a counter-side.
Anything good, evokes anything bad and the other way around. While 2 dogs are fighting over a bone of wealth and power, others, on the opposite side of the spectre are looking for ways to create new life. While some politicians create diversion to fortify their own power, others are fighting to bring people together.

I guess this is typical for the times we live in, where we need to learn first what we don’t want, before we can proceed into the creational powers of number 3.

You know how violinists can boast on having a real Stradivarius?
Well….my dog is a real Pavlov.
Pavlov, for those not familiar with the researcher who tied his name to dogs drooling at the sound of a bell indicating food was on its way, was a scientist who in fact studied human behavior, but felt dogs would serve the purpose of evidence too.
Personally I find the ease with which science compares rats and other animals to people often questionable,
but Pavlov I must admit had a point with his claim that living beings in general tend to respond to programmed impulses.

Taking my dog as an example, she responds like a prototype should.
When I call her name, she stops in her tracks, turns around and looks at me.
When I place her food tray on the floor, she immediately comes to the kitchen to eat (also when the food tray is empty)
When I put my shoes on to go out, she runs to the front door to get there first and sits till she’s figured out whether she’s allowed to come or not.  She even does this when I put my house slippers on, which proves it’s my  ‘when I put things on my feet’  behavior that triggers the dog’s pattern.

Now as with many humans, the dog funnily enough doesn’t really know why she is doing what she is doing.
She has been programmed to behave this way, it is her pattern.
Us human beings also live by a lot of patterns and after a while also tend to forget why we do what we are doing.
Patterns create an illusion of safety. They dispense the necessity to be on our guard, as patterns tell us ‘this is the way we do things around here’. Yet ask your Self this:

Are patterns in fact a reflection of reality?

Patterns are tricky habits, making us believe we have everything under control. They are rules to live by. We believe they will keep us from missing out on something; while meanwhile we miss out on everything that takes place outside of these patterns
Patterns are like strongly embedded bob-sledge-trails in our brains, which we follow as fast as possible, not out of mindfulness but out of ‘pattern-fulness.’

Now consider this:
Do your regular sledge – trails really serve you?
What would it be like to take a relaxed stroll in the park and have a change of scenery?

In fact, with Christmas coming up, let’s make this a personal casestudy.
Dive into your subconscious and see what you would really like to celebrate this year surrounding the holidays and most importantly  how you would like to celebrate life.

Step outside the Xmas comfort zone and do something totally different for a change;
a bit like Scrooge who had a life changing experience and saved the life of little Tim by listening to the inner voices of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Scrooge after all, is nothing but an Archetype, or prototype if you will, mirroring how we tend to live by following patterns…

Celebrate this year’s Christmas as if you are celebrating for the very first time in your life.
Explore what you see happening around you, discover what you can mean for others at the same time asking yourself what would serve you in the present circumstances the best.
Have yourselves a merry conscious christmas holidays…

The Suit of Challenges are all about the development of the I-consciousness, the divine center traveling with us from experience to experience within one lifetime;
and from lifetime to lifetime and the intermissions in between.

The 4, is the number of balance, the comfort zone in which we like to reside. However there is more to life than the 4, such as proceeding to the 5, the number of the essence of being human, or the 6, the number of communication.

The cards summon up and support,
what you already know deep down inside.

Even though the cards of the Nan Yar – Who Am I method are read by the brain, they stand in direct communication with the subconscious. This is how things work with everything in daily life.
Should we only be guided by what is perceived by the brain; we would be computers without any form of empathy.

It can even be stated our subconscious plays the major part in the way we ultimately perceive and experience life.  This can be compared to an iceberg, of which 2/9 is above surface while the remaining 7/9 is out of our immediate view and perception, even though it can confront you big time, which in turn is what determines the way you ultimately feel.

Needless to say we, in the West, live in our heads a lot; in other words spend a relatively big amount of time living in only 2/9 above water.
The discomfort of that, is that our feelings of well being, happiness, curiosity or drive, do not reside in this ‘ 2/9 direct recipient of information’ , but…as the word indicates…in our feelings, the ‘invisible’, ‘non-proven’ 7/9 of who we are.

Without this subconscious, we would be robots without feelings. This is exactly the reason why government institutions and  courts of law, often  feel totally cold, harsh and unjust, as they totally only work with 2/9 of the perceivable humane truth, while the other 7/9 of the truth resides in the unknown.

We may not always be aware,  but the biggest part of our life is shaped after and initiated by that which we cannot directly perceive.  The Nan Yar – Who Am I cards, serve as a mirror to accelerate what otherwise would be kept hidden a while longer.

Everything within our perception, the top of the iceberg, has the function to summon up what lies underneath the water, in the subconscious. We associate that which we see,hear, touch, (sensory perception) with something that also lives within our inner world, and where the brain at some point knows limitations, the possibilities in the subconscious may well be as infinite as the Universe; with the experiences we thus gather in the subconscious reflecting back to the sensory system in the ‘top’ conscious.

Basically, everything operates in cycles. Just as insects and fruits serve as food for birds, who in turn serve to spread seeds, who in turn sprout and serve as food, literally everything that takes place in life stands connected, one way or the other, with all the other occurrences in life.

Everything in the world exists for a reason.
Everything has its own life cycle and as such is connected to everything else in life.
This connectivity in all its diversity of the 3 layers, the physical, psychological and spiritual realities, (see also module 3: the 3 Realities and their Gatekeepers) is mirrored in the last card XXI  The World as depicted at the top of this module

The World has good reason to be the last all-encompassing card.
Similar to how everything in life is connected , all 78 cards of the Nan Yar-Who Am I method are also inter-connected.
The presence of one card in the pack creates the prerequisites for all other cards to exist, in numerous different combinations, interpretable in an infinite number of ways.
As such, the Nan Yar – Who Am I cards, mirror as many situations as are present in the real world and are connected to all other sources of  wisdom at the disposal of humanity.
Tools such as the Tarot, on which the Nan Yar Who Am I method is based, are also part of life for a reason and also part of a life cycle. It are media that end up in the world to serve as steppin’ stones to a next phase in the development of the human collective, starting with a few people, to gradually be adopted into a culture.

In the past 5000 years, from about 3000 BC to the end of the 19th century,- the so called Kaliyuga era-, much as changed in the fields of human thought, feelings and spiritual awareness.
Money was introduced, originally as a means to a goal, but soon became the goal. Humanity materialized placing a priority on appearances rather than a connection to the natural world, an image more real today than ever before.
And where before Kaliyuga there was an individual connection with spirituality from within;
this was now taken over by external institutions, churches, ruling their followers ‘from above’ .

Because of this, the capacity to source from ones own inner knowing, was overruled by cultural rules and regulations generated by the outside world (not to be confused with card XXI The World , which consists of an outer ánd an inner world.) thus moving esoteric knowledge to secret societies that only few were privileged to know about.

On the one hand this turned the individual person more into a member of the community, while on the other hand it in fact isolated the ‘ordinary’ individual from The World with the natural connection to the inner world and the insights that belong to it being severed and out of reach of that community.

These changes however are certainly not just negative; they are also part of a development. Learning curves for (wo)mankind, inspiring  awareness, enabling people to learn and distinguish night from day, darkness from enlightenment. (as depicted in the Nan Yar – Who Am I card 2 of Challenges: Dilemma.)

When Greek philosophers appear on the world stage, a new growing awareness is introduced in the way people think, with the individual becoming aware of having  an I-consciousness; initiating a quest to (re) discover the relationship between humanity and The World , the inner world and the outer world. This as opposed to earlier peoples who were guided by their Faraos and other leaders and regarded their leader as their god.

It is in the narratives of Homer that the first individual life stories, biographies and character descriptions are being displayed and it is a Greek diary in which someone refers to himself as ‘I’ for the first time in written history.

This historic phase in human development can be compared on the individual scale of a life time with a child around the age of 3, when it refers to itself  as ‘I’ for the first time and recognizes its own individuality.  It is basically then, it starts to create its own life story and becomes its own Storyteller

The esoteric sources from which the Marseille Tarot originates and from which Wisdom is handed down to humanity so it can further develop itself, were still kept hidden in Greek-Roman times. They were only accessible for initiates, priests and mystics.
At the sacrifice of ones life, it was forbidden to divulge any secret knowledge, as the awakening I-consciousness of ordinary people was still at the age of a toddler.

In the Middle Ages, the church ruled, – and moreover controlled- , the I-consciousness. While the Church was very much aware of this inner knowledge available to humanity it tried everything to keep these sources away from their flocks. The last thing religious institutions especially in those days wanted, was to have an independent parishioner with a mind of its own. (also see module 1: Earth,Breath, Presence)
To have ones personal spiritual connection was strictly forbidden. In the 7 prerequisites to live on earth (also see module 3: The 3 Realities and their Gatekeepers) inner spiritual life is therefore shown in disguise as V: The Pope, number 5, the number of the human being and the quintessence of life, the core.  (also see: module 5: People and Numbers)

Only as predecessor of the period of Enlightenment that would follow the Middle Ages did the Tarot appear in the world. As with other esoteric knowledge it took some time to be recognized as a Tool to explore ones inner world with.  To begin with it was used as a regular card game. Only later was it used to predict the future with, mostly with a (clairvoyant) third person interpreting the cards, rather than in dialogue with oneself.

Until this very day, the Tarot is used in a wide variety of interpretations, mostly by third parties interpreting the dialogue created through the cards.
The structure and composition of the Tarot however, with her archetypes, suits and number characteristics (also see module 4: The 4 colors: Challenges,Insights, Gifts & Tools)  define the cards as a perfect medium to distill your own insights in dialogue with yourself, while staying close to who you really are, with the Nil-card, The Storyteller from the Nan Yar – Who Am I method, serving as your personal guide.

In daily life you can apply the Nan Yar Who Am I personal Development method to draw a card every now and again and  interpret it with your own associative thinking, a natural gift rendered to every developing human being, safe-guarded in your subconscious); combined with what you know about the meaning of Numbers,Colors en Archetypes as discussed in the 7 modules of this course.

The phenomenon of ‘color’ is an integrated part of existence to such an extend, that we could hardly imagine a world without it. Its presence is seen as so normal – similar to the normalcy of being able to breath automatically,- that we are partial to overlooking the deeper meaning of it.

Color however is much more than a trend or a technique to enable us to distinguish one item from another. Color is also a reflection of certain characteristics.   We speak for example of ‘green energy’ where it is regarded as more environmentally friendly, reflecting its essence rather than its actual color.

We also know exactly what is meant by ‘something working like a red flag’ or when someone feels ‘blue’. We can give a ‘full color’ version of something, including each and every detail or a ‘colored’ version meaning we tell something in such a way that we change the actual essence of it.

Artists use color to reflect the character of something. Should Count Dracula be portrayed wearing a baby-yellow cape, he would hardly be threatening.  It is the black version of him that reflects the emotions he summons up.

In the outside world we need color to be able to distinguish one thing from the other. If everything would be in the same shade it would lack visual perspective and all look the same, like air. As soon as something materializes it gains a certain essence and with that a certain color.
People who can see aura’s describe an ever changing ballet of colors displaying itself,  revealing whole life stories.

Color is used in meditation, visualization, healing and to cleanse. Color actually is in everything, within us, outside of us and in the same manner we are born under a unique zodiac sign, we are also born with a unique ‘base’ color.

Our use of language also displays color. Expressions such as  ‘revealing one’s true colors';  ‘to color life differently’ or ‘to defend one’s colors’, all contribute a certain value to something, originating from a certain way of thinking, feeling or willing

In the Nan Yar – Who Am I Tarot for personal development color is used to reflect the essence of the 4 different suits, existing next to the 22 Trump cards (the Major Arcana).
The Minor Arcana consists of the 56 remaining cards, divided over 4 groups of 14 cards, numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 plus the court cards page, knight, queen & king.

The 4 suits are directly derived from the ordinary card game:

• Spades                     Clubs              Hearts              Diamonds
  

The Marseille Tarot depicts these same suits as:

• Swords                    Wands            Cups                 Coins (Pentacles)
  

From the personal development perspective of the Nan Yar – Who Am I  card kaartspel, these same groups are typified as:

• Challenges             Insights          Gifts                  Tools

The choice of colors for each suit is motivated as follows:

 Challenges. Color: Orange.  The cards of the Challenges suit of the Nan Yar -Who Am I Tarot represent the development of the I-consciousness, the spiritual component of each human being that co-exists and travels along through all phases of life.  In essence this involves the Karma each human being generates by the way he or she thinks, feels and acts upon; the Karma that is transported from one life to the other.  I have chosen for orange to represent this suit, as it is also regarded as the main color of  the second chakra. which harbors the creative consciousness to create ones own life and reflects the manner in which someone relates to the outside world.

Challenges are governed by the element Fire* fueling the expansion of the I-consciousness in the Michael-culture humanity develops in at present, with the sword as its symbol..

(* In this , the Nan Yar Who Am I interpretation differs from the Tarot of Marseille which assigns the element ‘air’ to the suit of swords.

 Insights. Color:Blue.

The color of Insights is derived from the elemant Air , connected this group of cards, in turn connected to the 5th Chakra, the throat chakra, which in the old yoga traditions has been assigned the color blue.  Insights represent the personal development in life,- this being a different aspect than the development of the I-consciousness which reflects the spiritual development. Personal development originates from the experiences body and soul witness while on their earthly journey and is established through the circumstances The Storyteller encounters in the outside world. The archetypes, number- and court cards involved again reflect the essence of a group of possibilities. Their ‘values’ depend on how a human being views the world and are not ‘absolute’. One person’s blue is not necessarily the blue of someone else.

Gifts . Color:Green. The Gifts are connected to Cups and therewith the element Water  and therewith emotion. In Yoga philosophy, green is seen as the color of the heart Chakra.  When regarding love as the true ‘fuel’ on which life is based and which we evolve on, it seems to hold a certain synchronicity that  green is also the color through which esoteric energies best express themselves.  Cups represent the essence of the Holy Grail, a quest in which each Storyteller can apply its very own talents.  These Gifts are not summoned up from the brain but is something that comes naturally from the heart and in this context is heartfelt.

 Tools Color:Red. Also with Tools I followed the Yoga interpretation, this time the color of the Mulahdhara Chakra,  the root chakra which in its direct connection with earth, serves as a base for the other 6 main chakras to rise up the spine. The Marseille Tarot also assigns the element earth to the coins, that correspond with ‘Tools’.
From a personal development perspective ‘Tools’, are the earthly skills and ‘apps’ through which we function.

In the examples above, the number and court cards are used intertwined. They have merely been selected to represent their color. In module 2, ‘The Storyteller as Guide of the Imaginative Force’ the essence of  Court Cards is further explained. In daily life perception, there appears to be one physical reality only. Our senses are in fact programmed to perceive only that which we can touch, see,hear, smell and taste.

Yet there is more to existence than what we can weigh and measure, elements as important as our physical presence .
Even more so, it is in these other layers of reality the sources of personal development are located through which we can communicate with our selves.
This module explains how this is expressed in the Trump cards.

All Trump cards, meaning the cards the Major Arcana consists of, the numbers I to XXI ,  with the Nil card, The Storyteller, leading the way, reflect a human life starting at birth all the way to the day to pass over to the spiritual world. These segments or phases are personified by ‘Archetypes’ mirroring their characteristics.

The ascending numbers (O tot XXI) do not imply an ascending value of the cards in the sense of XVII The Star being ‘worthier’ than VII The Chariot.  Similar to events happening in daily life, the moments in which we manifest certain behavior do not necessarily occur in chronological order. At one time we are card number III The Empress, while in another moment we’ll be card number XII The Hanged Man.
The deeper meaning of each individual card/archetype will be explained further on.

Each card is responsible for a characteristic of who we can be in its own way and just as important as any other card. Sometimes it are the small gestures that make the day. It is not always necessary for something to be ‘big’ or ‘bigger than’ to be effective.

Every human being carries all archetypes within. At the same time every human being is unique or as I read somewhere once: ‘as unique as everybody else’.

This is why each archetype of each trump card will reflect differently with each personality. In this context The Storyteller is again best capable of telling its own life-story. Of course one connects during life, with other people and opportunities, being part of  the bigger picture after all (XXI The World), yet ultimately you unlike any other, know exactly what an archetype reflects for you.

The number 3 in the layers of Trump cards.

The meaning of 3 emerges in many different esoteric settings. In the numerology interpretation of the Nan Yar – Who Am I Tarot the 3 is seen as the number of creation, which can be described as follows in the order of things: :

• While  the 1 still carries all potential within,
• and the 2 is the number of polarity within which life-force can begin to flow,
• the 3 is about what is created as a consequence of  the 2, the duality of things.

In the capacity of the number of creation the 3 also appears in the Nan Yar – Who Am I interpretation of the Tarot.  Divided into 3 layers of 7 cards,(I to VII, VIII to XIV, & XV tot XXI) the groups of trump cards mirror 3 different segments of being that c0-evolve in the life of The Storyteller. These layers comprise groups of archetypes carrying their own unique qualities (in addition to their unique individual qualities) as part of their role in a certain layers of life.

These layers are:

• The Temporal Body (Trump cards I, The Magician – VII The Chariot.)
• The Evolving Soul  (Trump cards VIII: Justice- XIV Temperance)
• Eternal Spirit (Trump cards  XV: The Antiforce   -XXI The World)

The Nil card, The Storyteller, precedes the 3 layers and is, as always, impartial to the characteristics of any other card, thus treading the world with an open mind, getting to choose from all aspects of life, thus creating the opportunity to get the most of it.

The following overview of the 3 realities, begins with the gatekeeper of each reality. The picture heading this module gives a full overview of all cards and the reality they are united in.

1.The Temporal Body.  I The Magician – VII The Chariot.

Briefly summarized, the first 7 archetypes of the Trump-cards mirror the conditions needed to function in the physical world.

• I The Magician is capable of handling gravity and knows the true story behind the illusion. As such, the magician is also the Gatekeeper of physical reality. When one can observe what takes place behind the veil, one is also capable of seeing the true nature of the other facets of the Temporal Body.
• II The Popess: recognizes her inner wisdom/intuition.
• III The Empress rules over the Yin Energies of Life
• IV The Emperor rules over the Yang Energies of Life.
• V The Pope mirrors the divine consciousness which lives within all human beings, no matter the origin of their religion or personal convictions.
• VI The Lovers mirror how all individuals live in relationship to each other, no matter the sort of relationship, lovers, friends, business partners,  parent-child, teacher-student etc.  A person develops and functions in relation to other people and blossoms when this is done with love.
• VII The Chariot: Living in the Now, realizing it is about  how  you manifest yourself now. Everything is adjustable at all times. No saint without a past, no sinner without a future.

2. The Evolving Soul, trump cards VIII (Justice) – XIV (Temperance)

The second layer of seven trump cards concerns the conditions enabling the soul to travel and co-experience along on the physical plane.

• VIII Justice. Honesty towards the self as well as the outside world is a first condition to have the soul co-develop. It should ‘be feeling right’. In that context the Archetype of Lady Justice is also Gatekeeper of the evolving soul. No true development can grow from dishonest soil.
• VIIII The Hermit. Thus the Hermit goes on its quest for its true self in all honesty.
• X The Wheel of Fortune. In the Nan Yar interpretation of the Tarot, the number X card refers to Freedom of Choice. It is not fate that will determine the outcome but the rightful owner of the life in question that holds the cards at play. It is for The Storyteller which glass is half full, half empty or refillable.
• XI Force.   When the 3 horizontal rows of 7 cards are laid out  on the table (as in the poster in the right upper corner) card number XI is seen lying exactly in the center of it all. In that context each Storyteller is the center of its own world and lies its power in totally remaining itself.
• XII Only then can the archetype of The Hanged Man  emerge itself into the experiences life has to offer, without loosing itself in what is happening, while looking at life from its very own angle.
• XIII Transformation. Memento Mori, ‘Think to die’ this card says, do what you wish to experience with your heart and soul and do it now.
• XIV Temperance,  Using only that which you need and avoid creating waste on any level, lifts the spirit.

3. Eternal Spirit. Trump cards XIV(The Antiforce) – XXI (The World)

The third layer of seven trump-cards involves eternal spirit. All things created by mankind on earth, mirror themselves in eternal spirit, causing the individual human being to be responsible for  his or her own actions and subsequent creation of  Karma as a result of those actions. As a ball rolls away when you kick against it, every action taken in life has a consequence.

• XV The Antiforce.  In the context of the above, the antiforce serves as a reminder to live up to moral standards, also turning him into the  Gatekeeper of eternal spirit; for the way a life is lived on earth, directly determines its spiritual outcome.
• XVI The Tower. To proceed on the spiritual path one needs to let go of attachment, not just of material possessions, but also of certain patterns or beliefs that can keep a person prisoner in his or her earthly life.
• XVII The Star personifies setting an example by sharing its true and precious gift with the world and doing so offering a first glimpse of an enlightened being.
• XVIII The Moon reflects the light of the sun and passes on spiritual knowledge through dreams and intuition.
• XIX De Sun is what life gifts humanity in all her appearances and  manifests in the heart of those who are open to it.
• XX  Judgment  is the responsibility one takes over ones own life; knowing that each and every gesture and action contributes to ones own Karma and subsequently to the Karma of human evolution.
• XXI. De World is the All Encompassing, in which all layers of development are united and all human dimensions are being made visible.

As such all trump cards reflect their own particle of  the total of things and guide us through our own interpretation of it.

When drawing a card, it is important to remember the cards are not there to tell you what is right and what is wrong, yet merely to make you aware of your possibilities in their context.

 A human life, needs 2 things:

• A World to live in.
• A Storyteller to create his biography.

To experience het life, also 2 things are required, 2 opposites from which life can develop itself; from which the Storyteller has the freedom of choice to do that which best fits his or her unique self.

All cards of the Tarot, – also in the interpretation of  ‘Nan Yar – Who Am I’ –  are as unique as a human being who is as unique as his or her fingerprint.

The Number cards, the 1 to 10 of Challenges, Insights, Gifts and Tools, all own, combined with the characteristics of the group they belong to, their very own nature, which in turn is interpreted differently by each individual who reads the card.

The numerology, combined with the elements and other characteristics represented in each suit, combined with the interpretation of each unique human being consulting the cards, offers an infinite number of combinations. What matters, is what you, as Storyteller of your own life, see in the cards, rather than what they have to tell you.

The Court cards, Page, Knight, Queen and King of each suit, take this a step further. Next to mirroring that which the traveler encounters within the earthly environment, the court card also reflects the journey of the traveler’s soul.  This is described as follows:

The Court Cards (Page, Knight, Queen and King) of each suit have their own rank with which they influence reality on soul level.

We all carry characteristics of the court cards within us. Just as humanity as a whole evolves in the course of existence, overcoming new challenges, acquiring new insights, ultimately getting the chance to improve the quality of life with the available tools; each and every one of us, individually, gets a chance to ‘improve’ during a lifetime. In the course of life, we acquire deeper insights that supersede our basic skills. These insights develop within our core, within our soul, adding to the ‘common’ properties of a being human.

Combined, the Number and Court Cards of Challenges, Insights, Gifts and Tools, represent the so called  ‘Minor Arcana’, which stands for ‘smaller secret.’

The Trump cards, the Major Arcana, ‘the bigger secret’ includes the card-numbers I (The Magician) to XXI (The World). Next weeks module, ‘The 3 layers of the Trump cards and their Gatekeepers’ will dig deeper into the essence of these cards. First we get acquainted with Trump card ‘0’ , the Trump card preceding all other cards.  In the Nan Yar – Who Am I  Tarot this is The Storyteller.

The Nil-card is totally transparent and capable of adopting the characteristics of any other card or any other suit, number or court card,  similar to  ‘The Joker’ in a regular card game.
And yet, the Nil remains itself at all times.

Multiply the Nil with any other number and the outcome will be Nil. To be able to do that, the Nil detaches from all judgment while granting all numbers, suits, court and trump cards their own space.  The only thing The Storyteller does is to mirror and observe, to see itself in what the other cards uncover.

This typifies The Storyteller as an independent human being, with freedom of choice, non-bound to gender, culture, age, prejudice or inhibiting convictions.  All other  77 Tarot cards, can mirror themselves through The Storyteller, without loosing any of their essence. The Storyteller becomes the number, court or trump card, to then return to the life of its own, turning him or her into the Storyteller of his of her own life.

The Storyteller and the last Trump card, number XXI, The World, are irreversibly connected to each other in this process.  The Storyteller needs The World to serve as a stage, while The World without a Storyteller has no story to tell.  Even if The Storyteller feels alone in The World at times, it is the place in which all of life can be reflected, mirrored by fellow human beings and the cultures The Storyteller encounters. The Storyteller needs The World, as Shakespeare stated, to serve as a stage on which the three-fold journey through time and space is enacted:

• The Physical Journey
• The Journey of the Soul
• The Journey of the Spirit

Card number XXI, ‘The World’, basically refers to the Universe, the Macrocosm, in which the Physical, Soul and Spiritual Journey come together.

The Tarot is derived from the ancient regular card game, Spades, Clubs,Hearts, Diamonds,Joker (Swords,Wands,Cups, Coins,’Fool’ ) with 21 added Trumpcards numbered from 1-21 (I-XXI) .

Based on their original symbolism the suits of the Nan Yar -Who Am I Tarot,  are translated as follows:

• Challenges  (Swords), This suit refers to the development of the I-consciousness.
• Insights (Wands), This suit emphasizes the aspects of personal development in this life.
• Gifts (Cups),refer to the talents and gifts each of us is born with; we all are unique.
• Tools (Coins) the earthly means available to all.

The Tarot was placed into the world by esoteric sources (probably the Rosicrucians), at the end of the Middle Ages as a means of personal development. As the ruling Church and State were not in favor of people developing independently , the cards were disguised as caricatures. A striking example of that is Trump card number II, the Popess.
Which official institute in the Middle Ages would ever recognize a female pope as the Sophia Archetype, the ultimate source of Wisdom ?!

The need for personal development had not yet evolved within the general awareness of the public. People of the Middle Ages were accustomed to being ruled by their King and Church. The Tarot was therefore more used as tool to predict the future with (by interpreters) rather than to serve as a medium from which to extract one’s own inspirations and possibilities.

While we still live in a world where setting boundaries and having convictions of your own can be viewed with suspicion by those who rule; we also live in a time within human evolution, where a growing awareness takes place of our own unique position in the bigger picture and what we can do for ourselves (and therewith others) within that framework.

In this context, the Nan Yar – Who Am I Tarot mirrors that which deep down inside is already known to you, both about yourself and the world you were born in.

Earth, Breath, Presence.

The Nan Yar -Who Am I card game is one of the hundreds of versions created since discovery of the Tarot of Marseille, the most profound difference being that the Nan Yar – Who Am I  version centers around personal development rather than having the future predicted by third parties. What ever it is the future has to offer, ultimately depends on how you interpret it and who better to determine and value that but you?

The term “Nan Yar’, stands for : ‘Who Am I’ or ‘He who is Present’ and comes from Tamil’, a language that came into existence before Sanskrit. It might well be the first question a human being asks when becoming aware of his or her presence on earth, wondering which reality life is made of, and which part he or she plays in being present. We may choose to have our choices in life determined by the outside world and her propaganda. Question is however, if the statements and promises made, coincide with what they ultimately are and promise. Another question is if these messages are aimed at serving your well being or the well being of the messenger. It is therefore important to create your own spot on earth, guiding your own Challenges, gathering your own Insights, applying your own Gifts using Tools that work for you.

The Body (1 of Tools) plays a crucial and guiding role in determining the path one chooses to take. This is why it is described as number 1 of Tools in the Nan Yar Personal Development game.

One can choose to numb the body or in fact wake it up. The body has a lot to say about its rightful owner and will not hesitate to do so through ailments, disrupted balance and somber inhibitions when we overstep our boundaries.

‘Visiting’ your breath a couple of times a day, observing which activity it reflects and how it ‘moves’ you, wakes you up to how you relate to life. To do three cycles of deep breathing (while taking your time and space for it) adds the bonus of expanded consciousness.,

When we look at the source of fulfillment in life, we are lead to the promise it holds; the gifts and talents we were born with and are free to choose from and develop.

Before anything else, everything consists of promise. We may choose to leave some promising features for what they are, depending on the situation we are in or what suits us better. This doesn’t alter however the promise in itself. Also here we need to watch whether it is what the outside world expects us to do, or perhaps ‘do what we do because we are used to doing it that way’. Is it the programming of your environment that is at work here or is it your own nature? It is advisable to do the occasional reality check while being present. To observe if what you think you see, coincides with what you feel you see.

Just as in the first card of the first layer of 7 numbered Trump cards of the Tarot (I-VII); the Illusionist or Magician ( the Archetype depicted at the head of this article);
the 1 of Insights is about the phenomenon to learn and see through certain things ‘people’ want us to believe.

Ask yourself how many times you do things ‘the way you are supposed to’ or because ‘that is the way you were raised’. Try and step out of your comfort zone, doing something a different way for once, surprise yourself with what else you can do.

Imagine what you would do in a certain situation if it involved nobody else but you, no outside world, no partners, no parents, no teachers, no money, no matter what. This way of looking at your world can be extremely liberating.

When looking at the esoteric meaning of the number 1, we see all there is in potential. The first step, the first word, the first gesture, the first day are all beginnings of what is yet to come. The number 1 is indifferent to any other number. All other numbers, multiplied by 1 do not add anything nor diminish the number 1.  The 1 remains who it is, the potential is always there, always exists, surviving any storm, any hype.

On the other hand the number 1 constantly renews itself. Every beginning is a new beginning, just like every starting day will be different from the day before. Again it totally depends what you choose to do with the new beginnings. The Art is not be distracted by what happens around you and to realize you need to draw your own breath first before helping others to breath. Nothing ever is a coincidence. As such also the order of ‘number 1′ cards as mentioned above is no random event.

• The Tools (all red cards) and their element earth, are connected to the physical world we live in and therewith our earthly properties (that which we use to function on earth)
• The Gifts (all green cards) bound to the element water, encompass the emotional side of life. In that they are related and in fact fueled by  ‘Insights’ yet more concern the heart of who we are, our gifts and talents from the cup of life, present from birth; while ‘Insights’ are the properties we assemble as we write our life story.
• The Insights (all blue cards) are connected to the element air and therewith our personal development; that which we build up during our lifetime(s) and becomes part of our Karma.
• The Challenges (all orange cards), connected to the element fire, refer to the ultimate essence of life, our spiritual development or expansion of the I-consciousness, the part of us we carry with us through all eternity. It are the anti-forces, in our present state of evolution, through which we evolve.
